On the west coast we really don't have to worry about big trucks like we did in Virginia... instead we have to worry about tourists in RVs bigger than a bus! Today we were passing through a construction zone and an RV was literally 5 inches away from us. The work zone was one lane and a traffic light was monitoring the flow of traffic. When it was our turn to go we of course started biking as close to the edge of the road as possible. Two small cars passed us then a giant RV passes us, at full speed none the less. After that we continued through the work zone in the middle of the lane so that no more cars would try to pass us!! We had to stop for lunch right after that incident because my whole body was shaking so much I couldn't control my bike!
Today we went through the Redwood forest! The whole day I was singing "This Land is Your Land" because that's the only song I know that mentions the Redwoods. We were so amazed by how huge the trees are! Make sure you take a look at our picture but it's really hard to capture on camera... if you ever have a chance you should really come see them for yourself because the pictures don't do them justice! In a few days we will pass through the "avenue of the giants"... can't wait for that experience!
We also learned a very important lesson today! Everyone knows not to go to the grocery store on an empty stomach or else you'll buy everything, but today we learned not to go to the grocery store when you are hungry and only riding a bike!! We stopped for a midmorning snack and came out of the store carrying enough food for two meals! We were really craving chocolate milk so we bought a half gallon of it and sat in front of the store and chugged it! We also really wanted goldfish but they are so expensive! The little bags are $4 and the big family sized carton was only $7. So of course we bought the huge family sized box thinking it would be a good idea! When we got out to the bikes we both looked at each other and realized "WHAT WERE WE THINKING"! We sat down and just started shoveling goldfish into our face! I'd like to say we won't make that mistake again, but I can't be certain.
