I feel like we went to the zoo today with the amount of crazy animals we saw in such a short distance. We saw a lot of elephant seals which are huge and really funny to watch. I think it was mating season though, or else they just like to hang out in pairs and males like to fight and bark at each other all the time. Not more than 3 or 4 miles down the road we saw a herd of zebras! [editors note: a group of Zebras is known as "harem"] I really don't know the story there... I'm sure they aren't wild zebras in California, but honestly nothing would surprise me at this point.
As far as I know there is a castle called Hearst Castle that imported the zebras for no apparent reason and they used to have a herd of 400 but it has since diminished. I guess that's what you get when you import zebras. The castle itself was very big! We didn't go too it because it was lots of miles off route but we saw it from a distance! Apparently it's a good touristy spot and it's not something that should be missed...oops!
We actually found water today which was quite an accomplishment! We finally found a town that either doesn't run on well water or the well wasn't contaminated! Hurray for clean water! We have learned a lot of things about CA on this trip... such as...
1) the only people who live in CA live in the cities, everywhere else is farmland and nothingness. For someone who lives in CA I'm sure it's great because you get the hustle and bustle of the big city but no more than 20 miles away you can relax in the countryside. For a biker you get these concentrated areas where you can find anything you possible could need and then miles upon miles of nothing... it's kind of weird.
2) Apparently, even if there is only 2 houses and a population of 18 people you can still make it a town. We went through a lot of "towns" today that were what I would call "fake towns". You can't call it a town if nothing is there California!
