Today is a special day for two very important people in our lives...our dads! Happy father's day! We wish we could be with you to celebrate your awesomeness but instead we made you a sign! Unfortunately we didn't ride through any populated towns and our total honk count was only 5. Oh well, today is still the day when we should all appreciate our fathers, grandfathers, and father like figures in our lives, it's never too late to say "I love you" so don't forget too!
For being such a special day, the morning didn't start out too great for us! 3 miles into our ride Mary broke a link in her bike chain! we weren't too worried because being the prepared college graduates that we are, we brought extras! We quickly got our chain tool and the extra links only to find out that they only fit Joe's bike, not Mary's!
WHAT TO DO!?!?
Well of course it's Sunday so every shop is closed and it's only 6:30 in the morning! After about 45 minutes of what Joe would call "putzing", we found a quick solution to our problem. We ended up fixing the broken link but it still needs to be replaced. For that reason we decided to only ride to Christiansburg, VA today because there is a bike shop that we can go to the next morning!
While in Christiansburg we found an all-you-can-eat buffet, visited the library, and talked the local fire department into letting us camp in the back of the fire house. Since it's Sunday, pretty much everything fun is closed.
The fun thing about biking cross country is tons of other people have done it before! In every town we go to, people are so friendly to bikers because they see them so often! People just look at us and say "your biking route 76? Good luck to you". Everyone can also tell that we are biking it East to West because they say we're too happy, meaning that we've only just started. At the end of the summer is when they get all the miserable bikers almost done!
It's going to be interesting to see if we will be miserable or not!
Mary and Joe
PS Mom, I'm still alive.
