We woke up early today to the sound of a bat landing on top of our tent. He just chilled for a bit and talked to his friends while we got our butts out of bed and dressed. We got on the road around 7:15 and headed for the mountains. It was really daunting to see them in the distance but we kept moving on while singing "she'll be comin' round the mountain when she comes"!
Our motto today was "slow and steady" as we climbed up the steep slopes. I am proud to say that we didn't have to walk our bikes up, we peddled all the way... also, we didn't cry! We did have to stop as often as every 15 minutes for a quick butt break and some snacks. The Blue Ridge Parkway was very beautiful and had very little traffic which made for a very pleasant day!
As we climbed the mountain we saw a lot of wildlife including a small bear all cuddled up taking a morning nap in a tree! At the "top" of the mountain was a small town called Love. We stopped and had a HUGE lunch... we were so hungry!!!! We both had a peanut butter and jelly, Mary had a grilled cheese, and Joe had some meety sandwich. We both decided the best part about biking so much is eating all the food! We eat twice as much as we used to and still always feel hungry!
After lunch we continued our climb and conversation consisted of "maybe this is the top of the mountain" as we continued to bike up hills! We FINALLY hit the down hill and it was quite treacherous! We had to stop just as often to give our brakes a rest. Being the smart college students that we are, this scenario played out:
"That was a steep down hill"
"I bet our brakes are really hot"
*College student touches breaks*
"OUCH!"
Yeah....That happened...
We rode a little farther and hit a nice campground to stop for the night. We went to the store and had a huge dinner of bread, cheese, pasta, tomatoes, and cucumbers. we set up camp, put things away, and proceeded to go to bed at 7pm.
Overall the mountains weren't as bad as we thought they would be ,but we were pooped!
Mary and Joe
PS Mom, I'm still alive.
