We biked through the mountains today which really wasn't as bad as everyone claimed it would be. The hills were not very steep and we took it slow and steady!
It was a beautiful day to bike in the mountains because it was clear and sunny, the perfect opportunity to admire all the wonderful views. We also had an excellent tail wind which meant we could average 7 miles/hr up the hills without even pedaling! It was kind of terrifying on a curve or when we were going down the hills because the wind was so strong it sometimes pushed us into the road!
We ended up having a short day today because we didn't realize to get to the next campsite we would have to do an 80 mile day... since we weren't prepared for that we just did a 30 mile day! We spent the afternoon relaxing at the campsite, taking care of our bikes, and reading.
Surprisingly we have been finding it difficult to find water. The towns that we have been through recently have had contaminated wells because of run off from the mountains. The past two campgrounds we have stayed at haven't had potable running water. Often times other campers (with cars) feel sorry for us and offer us a gallon of water which has literally saved our lives! Cafes and restaurants wont give us water to fill our bottles because they have to buy their water while the wells are contaminated. This means that all the water at the local grocery stores are about $5 a gallon!! Hopefully we will have better luck soon with finding water!
