We did a lot of miles today and it was a loooooong day! We had two pretty decent climbs of about 2000 feet. They really weren't that bad in that they were just long and windy rather than extremely steep so it just took a long time to climb. Compared to the mountains in VA they were nothing and the locals totally scared us for nothing! They kept telling us how we had a HUGE climb and we would be exhausted and wouldn't be able to go on! We didn't really time it the best either because we happened to do the climbs in the mid afternoon rather than the morning... oops... oh well we made it!
Northern CA is really not what we expected it to be. Apart from the Pacific Ocean it looks a lot like KY with tons of cow pastures, farms, and a lot of nothing... I'm going to be honest I made the same mistake that a lot of people make about NY. Someone who isn't from NY usually thinks of the city and they don't realize that 90% of the state is farmland! I assumed all of
CA would be like Hollywood or something! I will admit that the cows here do seem happier so maybe it's true that happy cows do come from CA (that one was for you DUH). We don't necessarily love the smell but we do love the chocolate milk! We passed a local creamery that makes the best chocolate milk and we plan to ship gallons of it back to the East coast for our personal consumption. Not sure how that's going to work with the whole 5oz rule on the airplane but we will figure it out!
We actually didn't pass by any populated towns today, couldn't find a grocery store, and of course ran out of everything! Rice and beans for dinner with a side of pretzels and we have to ride 20 miles into town tomorrow for breakfast. The plus is we have a beautiful view of the ocean from our campsite but the con is no running water. Thanks to the campers next to us who were able to spare a few bottles!!!
You can't appreciate the good until you have been through the worst!
