After a good night sleep at the hostel, we woke up around 5am, packed the bikes, ate a great breakfast, and hit the road around 6:15am. On our way out of Charlottesville, VA we met Steve, a cyclist on his way to work, who gave us 20 dollars and told us to stay safe!
In the morning we do our best cycling and we biked 20 miles with ease. We stopped to take a quick break and eat a banana when we noticed some ominous thunder clouds heading our way over the mountains. We looked at our phones and realized we were in for some rough weather! We quickly biked to the next town and found a peach market just in time for it to start down pouring! We hid from the rain, ate a peach, and chatted with the "peach lady" running the market.
Once there was a break in the storm we booked it to the nearest camp site a little under 3 miles away. We reserved a campsite for the night, set up our tent, unpacked our gear, took a shower and a quick nap and braced for the storm. We are currently in the common room of the office with free Wi-Fi and keeping out of the rain. We expect severe thunderstorms complete with 1 inch hail!
We felt very lazy only biking the morning, but we are both glad that we did because it would be very unpleasant biking in this weather! The next campsite was also very far away and we would not have made it in time! It works out nice that today was a light day because tomorrow is going to be terrible. We are literally climbing a mountain tomorrow and we can't even look at our elevation charts without cringing a bit. looks like we may be walking our bikes up...
